1Complete the fencing in of the entire property up to the place where you wish the gate to be installed. Gate openers are built to use with gates and fences that are already installed. Use a tape measure to determine the space required between the two gate fence posts. The distance should equal the length of the gate itself plus an inch on either side to leave room for hinges and the stop plate.

Set the fence posts into 12 inches of concrete in a hole roughly 6 inches across. Make sure the posts sit level and are at the same height, as this is essential for the gate to function properly. Allow the concrete to dry overnight before attempting more work on the gate.

Install the gate by bolting the gate hinges on the side of the post you wish the gate to open from. Use the level to make sure the gate is hanging straight. Clear away any obstacles to the gate opening and closing.

Install the power source that will control the gates operation. This involves running a PVC conduit for the electrical wiring to the gate from the indoor transformer. At this point, you have an option of installing a solar panel instead of the electrical wiring. If you do not feel comfortable dealing with electrical wiring or burying a PVC conduit in your yard, have a professional electrician do this work for you or you can choose to use the solar panel. If so, secure the solar panel to the non-moving fence post closest to the control box. Use the electrical wiring from the solar panel to plug in to the control box.

Bolt the control box to the chain link portion of the fence closest to the hinges on the side of the gate. Unscrew the bolts that are on the back of the control box to remove the bracket. Set the control box up about halfway on the fence and bolt the box to the fencing using the brackets. Some models of the remote control gate opener will come with hooks or clasps to allow the box to grasp onto the chain links.

Plug the receiver into the control box using the supplied wire. Hang the receiver just above the control box. Depending on the model of remote control gate opener you have, the receiver may have a wing nut clamp or a strap to use in hanging it.

Attach the post bracket assembly. Place the hinge of the bracket assembly about halfway up the fence post that the hinges are on. Use a grease pencil to mark where the holes in the bracket are. Using the 3/8-inch drill bit, drill a hole in each spot all the way through the post. Using the 3/8-inch bolts, attach the assembly to the post and lock in place with a washer and nut on the outside part of the post. Tighten firmly.

Attach the single gate opener to the post bracket assembly. On the left end of the single gate opener is a metal brace with a hole in the center. Insert the brace into the space on the post bracket assembly and use the pin to hold it in place. The pin should be firm but not tight as there will be slight movement as the gate opens and closes. Secure the gate opener to the chain link portion of the fence with the snap locks provided. Check to make sure it is level.

Extend the horizontal cross member that is attached to the gate bracket from the right side of the single gate opener. The horizontal cross member is a metal bar that reaches from the gate bracket to the stop plate. Some kits come with the bracket that extends and is part of the opener; others may require you to attach the bracket to the opener. Bolt the closed position positive stop plate to the end of the horizontal cross member.

Plug the power cable for the single gate opener into the control box. Open the gate to the point at which you want the remote to open it. Open the control box and locate the "Open" setting and press the knob or button. Close the gate until the closed position positive stop plate touches the right side fence post. Return to the control box and locate the "Closed" setting and press the knob or button. The system will remember these positions as points of reference.

Test the gate by using the remote control. Test the safety measures by gently blocking the gate while it is moving. If the safety measures are working, the gate should reverse movement for a few seconds and then proceed. If blocked a second time, you should hear an alarm go off.
