How to Put Sashing on a Quilt
- 1). Trim all of the quilt's already sewn blocks so that they're even and the same size, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Then, measure the length of the blocks.
- 2). Measure across the blocks, rather than the side of the blocks. It works best to measure along the seam line.
- 3). Cut strips of fabric to make the sashing. Use the width and length measurements to determine the size of the strips.
- 4). Cut squares the same width as your fabric strips to create cornerstones for your sashing.
- 5). Match the sashing strips evenly to the right side of all of the quilt blocks.
- 6). Gather the same number of fabric strips as quilt blocks. Then, sew cornerstones to the end of each of the fabric strips.
- 7). Attach the strips with cornerstones to the quilt blocks making sure that the cornerstones are sewn to the already existing fabric strips.
- 8). Join together the completed blocks to make the rows of the quilt. Don't make the top row. Leave the blocks for the top row aside.
- 9). Create sashing for the left-most border of each row by attaching cornerstones to as many fabric strips as needed for the row's left border.
