    Water Pipe in Concrete

    • Copper is the most common material used in primary plumbing for residential construction. Copper is a softer material than the cast iron pipes used in the past, which is an advantage as far as corrosion and interior debris accumulation in a plumbing system. The softness and flexibility of copper pipes make them more resistant to breakage from ground movement. However, there is a greater chance of stress from direct trauma when the concrete foundation is poured over the copper pipes.

Causes of Leaks in a Water Line

    • Temperature, chemical corrosion and water pressure are three common causes of water pipe breakage in a concrete slab. The temperature of both the soil and the water running through the pipes has an effect on the integrity of a water pipe, especially extremes and variations in temperatures from frozen ground and the presence of heated and cooled water in the pipes. Water with lots of calcium, lime, chlorine and ammonia--often referred to as hard water--also can lead to disintegration of a water pipe due to corrosion over time. High water pressure, especially through undersized pipes, contributes to water pipe deterioration over time as well.

    Results of Leaks in Slabs

    • The most obvious result of a water pipe leak in a concrete slab is a higher water bill. However, a leaking water pipe in a slab leads to other issues that are equally distressing. Repair options such as breaking through the slab for spot repairs, rerouting plumbing lines away from the slab or lining broken lines with epoxy are expensive. Mold and mildew growth in floor coverings such as carpeting are another potential worry for both financial and health reasons. Homeowner insurance premiums may be increased or policies canceled altogether when major leaks in a concrete slab occur.

What To Do When Leaks Occur

    • The most important step to take when a water pipe breaks in a concrete slab is to stop the water supply until you fix the problem. Find the main cutoff valve in your home; in homes built on a concrete slab, the main cutoff valve is usually located where the primary supply lines come up through the slab. Turn this valve clockwise fully to shut off the water to the house. Turn off shutoff valves that service other rooms and fixtures in the house such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and water heaters. Allow any repaired area in the slab to dry thoroughly before replacing rugs or carpeting.
