How to Tell the Thickness of Cardstock
- 1). Examine the packaging of your cardstock. Most U.S. cardstock comes in a weight measurement, assigning a lb. number to the cardstock, while most European cardstock, also known as cover stock, is assigned a pt. value that directly indicates the thickness of the stock. Find and note the measurement.
- 2). Divide the points of the cardstock by 1000 to determine the thickness of the cardstock in inches, as each assigned point is 1/1000th of an inch of thickness. 14 pt. cardstock, which is common, is .014 inches thick.
- 3). Estimate the thickness of cardstock measured by weight by comparing it to pt. measured cardstock on a general comparison chart. Cardstock weight can vary by manufacturer so comparisons aren't accurate. Generally 114 lb. cardstock is equivalent to 14 pt. cardstock and is .014 inch thick. A comparison chart is linked to in the resource section.
