How to Compare Different Types of Flooring

Instructions

1

Look for benefits of the various floor types you are comparing. Solid wood has a makeup that allows multiple refinishings, while engineered wood has the makeup for only one refinishing. Vinyl and plastic laminate options are dent-, scratch- and fade-resistant, while linoleum is dent- and fade-resistant. Ceramic tile resists dents and scratches, as well as moisture and stains.
2

Pay attention to the disadvantages of each floor type. Ceramic tile is very tough, meaning dropped dishes will break easily. Not all linoleum options resist scratches and moisture. To imitate stone or tile effectively, use expensive vinyl. Engineered wood, solid wood and plastic laminate flooring are susceptible to moisture damage, and last longer when covered with moisture protection.
3

Find out how the flooring types you're considering are installed. For example, some floors get glued down, such as vinyl and linoleum. Others, like ceramic tile, are difficult to install and may require professional assistance.
4

Figure out the total price of each type of flooring to help you decide. Factor in how much of the flooring, such as planks or tiles, you will need to cover the space, as well as what it will cost to install, if professional installation is necessary.
5

Take samples home and do side-by-side comparisons. Just looking at them in the store will not provide a sufficient preview of your room's future décor.
