    • 1). Prepare your work surface. For instance, if you are painting on a wall, you want to make sure the wall is clean.

    • 2). Paint your background first. This means any area that the palm tree touches. You do not need to add the details of the background, just the basics. As an example, you would want to put in the colors for the sky and the ground. Clouds or other beach items can be added later.

    • 3). Sketch out the rough outline of your palm tree with a pencil. Stand back and check your size and perspective. It is easy to change those things now rather than after paint is added.

    • 4). Paint the base color of your palm tree. Use darker colors first, such as a dark brown for the trunk and darker green for the leaves. You can use a larger foam brush for this, as there is little detail to the paint yet.

    • 5). Use a lighter brown to detail the trunk. Use a brush with a tapered edge to make the pointed details on the trunk. These points are where palm fronds used to be, but have fallen or been cut off. To soften the edges, draw the brush downward lightly. Add a lighter tan or gold to highlight the trunk and give it light.

    • 6). Use a variety of different greens to make the details on the fronds. These greens could be an olive green, yellow green or a pale green. You can even use some of the gold that was used on the trunk to bring in a little brown for a natural looking frond. Use the edge of the foam brush to create distance lines in the frond. To make a softer edge for the ends of the frond, drag the tip of the brush lightly through the paint. Use the corner to make little dabs of paint to highlight smaller areas.
