Porcelain Tile Disadvantages
- Porcelain tiles are more expensive compared to non-porcelain ceramic tile. Each porcelain piece costs about $2.00 more than ceramic.
- Porcelain tile pieces are not uniform in size. The sizes vary and are irregular because the tiles are cooked at very high temperatures.
- Many porcelain tiles are very heavy and cumbersome--sometimes as heavy as six pounds each. Because of this, they cannot be used over weak or thin floorboards. They are also fragile and easy to break when improperly handled.
- Installing a porcelain tile floor is not an ideal do-it-yourself project. Uneven tiles are a common problem. Choosing and working with the different sized heavy pieces is a job that a professional floor layer should handle, making the project more expensive for the property owner.
- There are imperfections in porcelain tile pieces that make them more susceptible to staining and gathering dirt. These imperfections must be manually sealed.
