How to Make a Usable Home Weather Station

    Rain Gauge

    • 1). Select a location to place your rain gauge. Choose an area that is exposed to the rain, so avoid placing it underneath trees, buildings and other obstructions.

    • 2). Measure ½-inch increments from the base of your cylindrical container, which should have sides and mouth of equal length, and mark them clearly using a marker pen.

    • 3). Plant the rain gauge into the selected piece of ground to avoid it being knocked over by the wind, but ensure that the top of the cylinder is still above ground level, otherwise excess water may run into it from the ground, producing an inaccurate sample.

    • 4). Check your rain gauge at regular intervals to see how much rainfall has been collected. Use the measurements you have marked to record the amount of water in inches.

    Wind Vane

    • 1). Make incisions at both ends of 12 to 14 inch piece of wood, using a hacksaw.

    • 2). Draw the outline of the top and bottom of an arrow on a sheet of aluminum and cut them out, using a saw. If necessary, clamp the aluminum sheet to a workbench to stop it from moving while you cut. Insert the arrows into the incisions.

    • 3). Cut a hole in the piece of wood and nail it to another vertical piece of wood of the same length. Ensure that the piece of wood with arrow at the end is able to spin freely.

    • 4). Secure the wind vane at a height equal to the roof of your house. The arrow head will clearly demonstrate which side the wind is blowing from. Use a compass to see if this is north, east, south or west. Record your observations over a period of time.

    Barometer

    • 1). Cover the jar with a balloon and secure it with the rubber band.

    • 2). Attach the straw to the balloon lid; leave ¾ of it hanging outside the jar's circumference.

    • 3). Place a piece of paper beside the jar, with regular spaced lines on it, so that the straw points to the paper. When air pressure is low, the straw will point lower on the paper and vice versa.
