Double Hung Window Types

Double hung windows are very contemporary and classic in appearance. They are generally longer in length rather than width. Double hung windows are generally made of wood, vinyl, aluminum or fiberglass. Many homeowners enjoy having a double-hung window due to its maximized ventilation. It is versatile because it fits into any decorating design from historic to contemporary and can be easily decorated because of its standard style. Though this type of window was not common in newer homes, it has recently gained popularity as a replacement window and for new residential projects.

Standard

The double hung window is composed of two smaller windows. The standard type is the most familiar and found in older homes. This window has an upper outside sash that slides down and a lower sash that slides upwards. Basically, the two windows can move up or down within the frame.

The standard type is rectangular and can come in many sizes, though always longer in height, rather than width. Different models are offered with removable sashes or tilting sections. This makes cleaning, weatherproofing, painting and repairing the window very simple and easy.

Another approach to the standard window is an arched-top exterior casing. This is the most economical method of achieving a round top appearance without having to cut the glass.

This type of double hung window resembles the standard format. It has the same sash-style. The only difference is that the upper window can be in a radius shape or have a round top. The frame is normally cut in the same way as the window (round top).

In some cases, the exterior of the window will have a round upper sash, where as the interior has a rectangular or square sash. This style is common in new residential projects because it has a more architectural and sophisticated look.

Double hung windows are often used as replacement windows. This means that you can replace your current window with a double hung window but still keep the existing frame and trim. Due to the fact that the new custom-size window is basically fitted into the frame, the glass parts will be slightly smaller than a regular window.

New construction windows should not be confused with replacement windows. These windows can be either standard or round top. They are used in new-home construction and in major renovations. These windows come in set sizes only.

Due to the fact that they slide up and down, this type of window does not take up much exterior space when opened. This makes the window ideal for areas where there is not much space to work with, such as porches and patios.
