How to Preserve Wild Grasses for Flower Arrangements
- 1). Select wild grasses that do not have any apparent disease or insect damage and remove them with gardening shears or a sharp knife. It is best to gather these plants at the end of the growing season in the fall to ensure you get the best specimens.
- 2). Place the grass stems in a container of water as you collect your supply. This helps to prevent wilting and to maintain color until you are ready to begin the proper drying process.
- 3). Air dry your wild grasses. The best method is to tie the ends of the plants together with rubber bands and hang them upside down in a dry, warm spot for a couple of days. Make sure the grasses are in a room with good air circulation and continually check them for the ideal dry, crisp condition necessary for preservation. This can take from one to three weeks.
- 4). Place your dry grasses in an airtight container and keep them stored until you want to use these plants in a flower arrangement.
