How to Make a Sheath for a Multi Tool

    • 1). Set the multi tool on a sheet of paper. Measure 1 inch away from each edge of the multi tool and trace the tool's outline, leaving the 1 inch excess on all sides.

    • 2). Cut out the stencil and set it on another section of the paper. Measure 1 1/2-inch above the top edge and 1 inch out from each of the other sides. Draw a rectangle to connect the four reference points and cut out the stencil.

    • 3). Hold the rectangular stencil against a belt loop on a pair of pants. Mark where the loop will need to attach on the sheath.

    • 4). Place both stencils on the section of cowhide and trace the outline onto the leather with a pen. Use the pen and ruler to mark a 1- by 5-inch strip and a 2- by 4-inch strip on the cowhide. Cut out all four pieces. Use the rectangular stencil as a guide to mark the placement of the belt loop on the rectangular piece of cowhide.

    • 5). Center the multi tool on the rectangular piece of leather. Set the cowhide cutout of the stencil tool on the multi tool. Press the edges of the top leather piece against the rectangular section to check the fit. Be sure there is enough overlap to drive rivets through. Make any necessary adjustments.

    • 6). Set the multi tool and top cowhide piece aside. Turn the rectangular piece of leather face-down. Line up the 2- by 4-inch leather strip with the markings for the belt loop. Fold the ends under and drive the awl through both corners of each end. Attach the loop to the back of the sheath with four rivets.

    • 7). Place one end of the 1- by 5-inch leather strip directly above the top of the belt loop. Awl through both corners and attach the protective strap with two rivets.

    • 8). Attach the female portion of the snap near the top of the sheath cover with glue or thread.

    • 9). Turn the rectangular piece right side up. Return the tool and sheath cover leather piece to their original position on the rectangular piece. Pin the cover section in place to the back of the sheath before removing the tool.

Drive the awl through the sheath cover and back at regular intervals along the side and bottom edges of the cover piece. Leave the top open for the tool's entry point.

Complete the assembly of the sheath by driving rivets through each awled point. Cut off the excess of the rectangular leather piece so the entire sheath conforms to the shape of the multi tool.

Line up the 1- by 5-inch leather strap against the snap on the sheath cover. Cut off any excess to create a tight fit against the tool and attach the male end of the snap to the inside of the strap. This will give extra protection against the tool falling out of the sheath of its own accord. Place the tool in its sheath and snap the strap closed.
