Casement Window Style Information

    History

    • These windows were the first form of movable window. In the middle of the eighteenth century, they were made with heavy oak framing. They later were made with two panes and a lead bar in the center.

    Types

    • A single casement has hinges on the side and open by swinging either in or out. A French casement window has two casements mounted side by side, with a single pane on each and both opening at the center. An awning casement is hinged at the top and opens from the bottom.

    Features

    • Casement windows are constructed with a frame, lights (a term for the glass used in a window frame) and hinges. They can be installed as a single unit and with a wood or metal frame.

    Space

    • Make sure that when windows are installed in close proximity, ample space is left so that the windows don't hit each other when opened.

    Caution

    • Casement windows can open more widely than other windows, and so could be dangerous to small children who might fall out.
