Windows Troubleshooter
- Often, computer problems are actually the result of the simplest problems. Check all the cables on your computer and verify they are plugged in securely; this includes the monitor cables, power cables, keyboard, mouse, printer cables and any other devices connected to your system.
- If you have several extra devices connected to your computer, such as an external hard drive, web cam, PDA, MP3 player, etc., disconnect them. Have only your monitor, keyboard and mouse connected. Restart your computer and see if the problem persists. If not, then one of the removed devices is your problem.
- Computers can be adversely affected by malware, malicious software such as virus, spyware, adware and worms. Scan your computer for any suspicious software using a program such as AVG Free, Norton Antivirus or McAfee to name a few.
- Safe mode is a basic start-up mode where your computer won't load most software and hardware installed on the system. This mode is used in an effort to get the system started so that malware scans and other repair activities can be performed. To enter safe mode, tap the "F8" key on your keyboard as the computer is starting up and select "safe mode" from the boot menu that will appear.
- If you are still having trouble, determine if the issue is something you are comfortable fixing yourself. If not, take you computer to your local PC repair shop and give them all of the information you have regarding the problem, as well as what was learned during the troubleshooting process.
