How to Calculate Measurements on a Ruler

    • 1). Place the ruler parallel to the object you are trying to measure. Make sure the "0" (zero) on the ruler is even with the bottom of the object. On some ruler, the zero does not start at the end of the ruler.

    • 2). Make a hash mark indicating the length of the object. If the object is longer than one full length of the ruler, make a hash mark and carefully realign the ruler the "0" of the ruler on the hash mark. Add the measurement onto the full length of the ruler for a measurement.

    • 3). Examine what measurement the ruler is using. Depending if it is in centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm) can drastically change how small or large the measurement is when finished measuring.

    • 4). Convert the measurement into a different value, such as centimeters to millimeters, with a conversion chart if needed. Sometimes you will need to take note of the centimeters of an object, but you might only have a millimeter ruler on hand. If this happens, just use a conversion chart to convert the measurement into a value that is useful to you.
