Ideal Soldering Temperatures
- The most common alloy is a 40/60 tin to lead ratio, which requires temperatures of 460 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures for normal operation are considered to be between 518 to 608 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Desoldering requires higher temperatures as it is used to fix or correct an improperly soldered joint. Ideal temperatures for desoldering range from 608 to 680 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is chosen make sure the joint is absolutely clean before your proceed.
- Beginners can purchase a plug-in style soldering iron with temperature controls built in. This type of iron sometimes has a knob you can turn to change the temperature. Other models have a fixed temperature.
