Unicycle Instructions
- When learning to ride a unicycle it is good to do it with others there to support you. Get on top of the unicycle with a friend on either side of you to support your weight as you get comfortable. When on the unicycle, sit up straight with your head facing forward. Put your weight on the seat and not on the pedals. If you lean too much weight on the pedals you will fall. Try pedaling with half turns before trying a full turn of the pedal. Once you have become comfortable, switch to holding onto a friend's hand while you are riding to get used to riding on your own.
- There are several ways to get on to a unicycle. The standard method is to put your foot on the rear pedal with the seat underneath you. Once you are in position you step up on to the unicycle. The rolling mount is a way to mount using forward momentum. The unicyclist rolls the unicycle, then puts a foot onto a pedal and springs onto the unicycle. There are several variants of side mounting and the rolling mount.
- The unicycle takes a bit less maintenance than a standard bike but maintenance is still important. Tires should be pumped so that they are overinflated. If the area you will unicycle on is slippery you will want to underinflate the tires for better traction. You should buy tires that require 40-50 psi. Make sure to grease the chain regularly. As it is one gear, there is very little maintenance involved but the sprocket, where the chain catches the gear, should be checked regularly for wear.
