How to Carve Numbers in Wood
- 1). Prepare the wood. Begin with a nice piece of wood that is cut down to the size you need. Prepare it by sanding it until it is smooth and ready to be carved. For an address sign, a 1-inch thick piece of wood is ideal. Craft stores often sell chunks of wood that are made for this purpose.
- 2). Determine the numbers you will use. Write the numbers out on a separate piece of paper that is roughly the same size as the piece of wood you are using. Arrange the letters in a way that looks good on the wood sign.
- 3). Write the numbers on the wood. Either free hand the numbers or use stencils to create different types of fonts. Before proceeding, make sure the numbers are exactly how you want them on the piece of wood.
- 4). Use a V-shaped hand carving tool to carve out the outlines of the numbers. This tool is designed for this purpose and will help create the correct depth carved into the wood. There are a number of different sizes of V-shaped tools. It is important to pick out the correct size depending on the thickness of the wood and the size of the numbers.
- 5). Carve out the inside of the numbers with a flat-bladed hand carving tool. Use caution when you are carving out the insides so that you do not carve too deep or outside the numbers.
- 6). Sand the wood again. Before applying a finish coat to the sign, make sure the sign is free from splinters or sharp pieces sticking out.
- 7). Apply a finish to the wood. To do this, you can either paint the sign or stain it. You can also apply a dark glossy stain into the numbers and finish with a light colored stain over the entire wood piece.
