    Startup Repair

    • Windows Vista comes with a very convenient solution for booting problems called Startup Repair. This feature usually takes care of most booting issues that may occur with Vista. Startup Repair can be accessed by inserting the Vista DVD into the computer and restarting it. Once the computer restarts, press any key to start the repair process. Fill in the basic required information about your language and time settings, then click "Next." On the following screen, click the "Repair your computer" link in the lower left corner, select your partition, click "Next," then select "Startup Repair" from the menu. This will start the process, which will automatically locate and repair any fixable problems.

    System Restore

    • There may be times when the Startup Repair feature cannot fix the underlying problem. In this case, System Restore will take care of most problems related to starting up if the computer was functioning properly at an earlier time. If you are able to load Vista but it's slow or erratic, you can use System Restore by clicking "Start," followed by "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "System Restore." Otherwise, you can access System Restore by following the same steps as Startup Repair but selecting "System Restore" on the final menu instead. You can manually choose a restore point or let the computer choose one for you. The computer should be reset to the same settings as the time before the problem occurred.

    Safe Mode

    • Usually if there is a program causing booting problems, Safe Mode can be useful. You can boot in Safe Mode by holding down the F8 button while restarting. This will disable most programs that automatically start up with Windows so you can pin down which of those programs might be causing the problem. If you determine that a program is indeed causing the booting issue, you can uninstall it in Safe Mode.

If your computer only starts in Safe Mode, it may be due to a hardware problem. Check to make sure everything is connected properly. If the problem persists, it may be best to have a technician inspect your computer.

    Reinstall

    • When all other options have been exhausted, reinstalling Vista may be your only solution. Keep in mind that a complete installation of the operating system will permanently delete all files on your computer, so this should only be done as a last resort. You can reinstall by restarting the computer with the Vista DVD and following the on-screen instructions.
