How to Convert a Home Entertainment Center Into an Armoire
- 1). Begin by sanding the entertainment center with 150 grit sandpaper removing any shine, flaking paint or splinters. Using a moist cloth, wipe away any sawdust or debris. Allow to dry completely. With a screwdriver, remove the doors from the entertainment center and unscrew any door pulls. Pull out any drawers and stand face side up. Remove any drawer pulls.
- 2). Paint the entertainment center inside and out with a paint color that suits your décor and taste. Paint the drawers (if applicable) and doors inside and out. Two coats may be needed to achieve optimal coverage. Allow to dry completely.
- 3). Smooth a coat of clear sealer or polyurethane on both the inside and the outside of the entertainment center as well as drawers and doors. Allow to dry. Using the 150 grit sandpaper, swipe over the dry polyurethane and wipe any residue away with moistened cloth. Apply a second coat and allow to dry. Sanding between coats will remove any brushstrokes or inconsistencies in the first coat of sealer.
- 4). Replace the drawer and door pulls. Newly purchased pulls can be used instead of the old if desired. Using the screwdriver rejoin the doors to the entertainment center. Slide the drawers back into place.
- 5). Add a tension rod to the area of the entertainment center that used to hold the television. Simply squeeze the two ends of the rod together until you are able to fit into the opening and release. This rod may be used to hang clothes or other hanging objects.
- 6). Place storage baskets onto the open shelves and fill with items such as socks or belts. Fill the drawers and remaining areas with clothes, shoes or other accessories. Decorate the top of your new original armoire with picture frames and candles. Enjoy!
