How to Make a Volcano Out of Felt

    • 1). Draw a plan of the cross-section volcano on paper. Trace it and cut out the composite sections to use as templates when cutting the felt.

    • 2). Cut three long rectangular strips of felt in dark brown, light brown and orange to represent the layers of the earth's crust. Use tacky glue to glue these on to the posterboard, positioning them at the base of the sheet.

    • 3). Cut a large cone shape out of dark gray felt to use as a base for the cone of the volcano. Glue it in position on the board, above the layers of the earth.

    • 4). Cut smaller cone-shaped strips from the light gray and black felt to represent the layers of built up lava. Glue these in position on top of the dark gray cone base. Cut a small parasitic cone from dark gray felt and position it on one side of the volcano.

    • 5). Cut a semi-circle of red felt to represent the magma and glue it in position in the center of the base layer of the earth's crust. Cut a central conduit from orange felt and glue it on top of the cone shape. Show how the conduit branches to feed the parasitic cone.

    • 6). Add lava cut from orange felt to the outside of the cone shape. Cut a cloud shape from the light gray felt to represent the ash cloud hanging above the crater.

    • 7). Label the cross-section diagram carefully following the Woodlands Junior School link in the Resources section.
