How to Determine the Cross Sectional Area
- 1). Determine how the solid is to be sliced it two parts.
- 2). Observe the parts after slicing to determine the cross section's shape. Say that, for example, you split a sphere exactly in half. In this case, the cross section is a circle.
- 3). Calculate the area of the cross section. Take for example a circle. The area of a circle is pi x r^2, where r is the radius of the circle. If the radius is 3 inches, the cross sectional area is (3.14159) x (3 in )^2 or 28.3^2 inches.
