Uses for Black Light Bulbs
- Black light works by emitting ultra violet light. In the dark the black light can make things light up such as white clothing or invisible stamps. The glow the light produces is due to phosphors, which are all around us, and react to the UV from the black light. Common uses for black lights include, decoration, in bowling alleys, dance clubs, in money, and in crime scene investigations.
- Black lights can make a child's room a star guide to the universe. All you need is glow in the dark stars and a black light. Take fishing line and create the constellations on the ceiling. The fish line will shine brightly in the black light. Kids can also create secret messages using the fish line and black lights.
- Bowling in the dark with black lights is called cosmic bowling. Bowling alleys across the country offer this activity. Many alleys will use special bowling pins and bowling balls that will glow bright under the black lights.
- U.S currency has ribbons of UV reactive strips embedded in each bill to combat counterfeiting. Different bills have a different color associated with the denomination. Many banks and even retail stores will have a black light available to check if there is any concern that a bill might be counterfeit.
- Many nightclubs will stamp your hand with an invisible stamp. This stamp ensures that you have paid any cover charge and have been checked by the club for entrance. This stamp may also allow re-entrance later. Clubs will rotate stamps making them hard to fake. Another establishment that use black lights is Chuck E Cheese. Each child and adult are stamped with matching numbers. When the child leaves, their hand is checked to make sure it matches the adult with whom they are leaving.
- Forensic investigators use black lights to look for bodily fluids. All human and animal bodily fluids will glow under black lights. Law enforcement agencies around the globe use this technology to search for evidence.
