How to Make Notches in Wood to Fit Hanger Straps

    • 1). Measure the width of your hanger strap, using a tape measure.

    • 2). Determine the best notch placement for your project. The exact placement will vary depending on the size and length of the duct, as well as the shape of the wood. Mark the location with a pencil.

    • 3). Mark both sides of the wood with a pencil, to a depth that corresponds to the width of the hanger strap. Draw a perpendicular line at the end of each mark, to create an easily visible stop-point for the notch.

    • 4). Orient a hacksaw across the top of the wood, so that the blade aligns with the marks on each side.

    • 5). Saw through the wood with the hacksaw, until the saw reaches your pre-marked stop-points.

    • 6). Press the hanger strap into the notch. If the notch is tight, tap the strap in lightly with a rubber mallet.
