How to Trim a Wood Veneer Door
- 1). Remove the door from its hinges. Place the hinge pins in the hinges, so you won't lose them.
- 2). Mark the side that you want to trim, to show the area that needs to be cut off. Use a pencil and a yardstick to make the straightest mark possible. The bottom of the door should have thicker veneer than the top because the bottom of a door will sometimes need to be trimmed to make room for thresholds or carpeting, so for a top-to-bottom trim, cut off the bottom first. If you need to trim off the side, trim off the hinge side. This will hide the engineered wood core if you trim down past the veneer, and also will prevent the door knob latch from sticking out too far. You'll need to remove the hinges with a screwdriver in order to trim off the side.
- 3). Score the mark you made to indicate where the cut will be made. Use a utility knife to cut a deep line where the saw will cut. This will prevent the wood from splintering and give you a smoother cut.
- 4). Lay the door down on a saw horse and trim off the side of the door with a circular saw. Sand any rough edges with 150-grit sandpaper
- 5). Paint the trimmed side to match the rest of the door, or finish the door by applying a layer of polyurethane over the door surface. Wait for the paint or polyurethane to dry according to the instructions on the can before reattaching the hinges and replacing the door.
