    Preparation

    • Select a long, thin object for the base of the fishing pole. The item does not need to be water resistant but it should not show damage or wear if it does become wet. The intention of the pole to absorb weight shock and bounce back to its original shape. Bamboo offers flexibility and durability. Its lightweight quality is ideal for identifying the moment a fish is on the line. When you hook a fish on a bamboo pole, the stick bends drastically and bounces back to the original shape once the fish is removed. A similar quality if found in other sticks so consider a lengthy, bendable tree branch if you cannot find bamboo. Young trees tend to have more pliable branches because they have more moisture than older trees.

    Adding the Line

    • Attaching the line to the pole requires careful attention. The line needs to hold firmly around the pole to have a successfully fishing experience. If you catch a fish and the line is not secure, the fish will run off with it, the hook, and the bait. Consider using a line with the weight allotment of the fish you plan to catch. If you hook a fish on an inadequate line, it will most likely break before you get the fish out of the water.

    Securing the Hook and Weight

    • The weight on the line helps keep the bait in one place when it's in the water. The amount of weight you use is determined by the heaviness or mobility of the bait. If you are fishing with a minnow, a light snap weight works best because the small fish can maneuver around. A minnow on a line without a weight will tend to swim at the surface, decreasing your chance of catching a fish. If the bait is heavy but immobile, you can use a small weight to ensure it holds its place. Light bait such as worms benefit from heavier weights. The benefit of this fishing technique is that it hinders your chances of getting the hook snagged on aquatic plants.
