How to Make Leyden Jars Into Batteries

    • 1). Wash and dry the jar and lid thoroughly. Line the inside of the jar with foil, covering the entire bottom and halfway up the sides. Do the same on the outside of the jar, wrapping and taping the foil in place with electrical tape. Be as neat as possible; the inner layer of foil does not need to be taped.

    • 2). Drill a hole in the center of the plastic lid the same size as the diameter of the copper rod. Slip the copper rod into the lid so that the lid is in the center of the rod. Wrap electrical tape around the rod on both sides of the lid to hold it on place.

    • 3). Use metal snips to clip a four-inch section of copper chain. Lay the first to links against the bottom of the copper rod and tape them together with electrical tape. Place the copper rod, chain-end down, into the jar and screw the lid firmly onto the jar.

    • 4). Snip a six-inch length of plastic-coated wire. Strip one and a half inches of each end of the wire and wrap one bare end around the top of the copper rod. The wire will conduct the electricity to another object; the plastic coating in the middle will prevent mishaps.

    • 5). Wrap the loose end of the wire around the metal tines on the plug of an old lamp. Make sure the lamp still works, first. Wrap the wire and plug in some electrical tape for insulation.

    • 6). Fold the piece of felt into a stiff tube and grip it with rubber-handled or silicone tongs. Rub the felt against the top of the copper rod to generate static electricity. The charge should build enough that the lamp lights up.
