Instructions on How to Make a Small Animal Sculpture
- 1). Prepare the paper mache pulp compound according to the directions on the package. Spread plastic sheeting on the work table.
- 2). Decide which small animal you would like the sculpture to be. Get photos of the animal from different angles. Measure the proportion of its head to its body. This keeps the proportions of your finished sculpture realistic. Measure the same way for legs and tails.
- 3). Make the main body part. Take a handful of the papier mache compound and roll it into a ball. It should not be larger than you can hold in your loosely closed palm. Knead and shape the ball into an elongated shape, depending on the animal you are making.
- 4). Shape the head. Start with a smaller ball of paper mache pulp compound. After shaping, add eyes, ears, nose and any other features. Make these additional features out of smaller amounts of pulp compound. Stick the head onto the body.
- 5). Make the legs by rolling the pulp compound on the table then shaping them appropriately. Make and add feet to the legs. Stick the legs onto the body.
- 6). Make a tail if the animal has one. Attach the tail to the body.
- 7). Add any other features such as scales for alligators or manes for horses using the kneading, rolling and shaping methods. Attach these features to your animal.
- 8). Let the whole sculpture dry completely and paint your small animal sculpture.
