    Needles

    • There is a needle the right size and shape for any type of sewing project, from leather to delicate fabrics. Sharp wedge-point needles are used for denim, leather and vinyl sewing. Ball point needles are made to not harm delicate synthetic fabrics. There are needles specifically for embroidery -- you can identify them by their long eye -- and needles for quilters. For a basic sewing kit, choose a #8 weight standard sharp needle. The standard sharps come in sizes 1 to 10 with the larger number indicating a smaller shaft. A variety pack of various sizes can be purchased at a fabric store.

    Tape Measure

    • A dressmaker's or tailor's tape measure is usually made of flexible cloth or plastic with metal tabs on each end. This tape measure can be rolled into a tight roll for storage, or will comfortably hang around the neck of the seamstress while working. A basic tape measure is 60 inches long, although they can be purchased in longer lengths. The dressmaker's tape measure is marked in inches on one side and centimeters on the other.

    Scissors

    • A cutting device is essential for a sewing kit. A pair of small embroidery scissors can be used to clip threads or trim small bits of cloth. Embroidery scissors are about five inches long with sharp blades. Dressmaker's shears have a bent handle so the blade lies flat while cutting fabric. These shears come with eight-inch blades and are made for either right- or left-handed sewers. A pair of inexpensive paper-cutting scissors is useful for tasks that would dull the blade of your shears, or just for snipping threads.

    Pins

    • There are a variety of pins from which to choose, but for general purposes, straight, stainless steel dressmaker's pins work for most sewing. Pins vary according to head types, length, sharpness and thickness. Other types of pins include very light, thin pins called silk pins for delicate fabrics. Pins with rounded tips are used for knits or sheer fabric because they will not cut the fibers. Colored heads are available on some pins simply to make them easier to see.

    Thimble

    • A thimble is worn on the index or second finger by hand sewers, and is used to push the needle through the material. For those who do a lot of hand sewing, a thimble is a must. Even if you only sew on a loose button now and then, it is good to have a thimble to protect the end of your finger. Thimbles come in various sizes, allowing for a good fit. They are available in plastic, metal or leather.
